Observations on Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG Beta

Posted by on 4:11 am in DCCRPG | 0 comments

Goodman Game’s Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG Beta has arrived. Gentle readers, before I go much further let me come clean on two points: I’ve been playing D&D for a long time, but the bulk of that role-playing happened using AD&D rules.  I mostly leapfrogged 3rd Edition altogether going (more or less) straight from AD&D and 2ED until a few years ago when I took up 4ED. In those later years, I became a fan Goodman Game’s DCC modules. IMHO, they are this generations Judges Guild, and by that I mean premiere adventures created...

Design is done! Well, kinda…

Posted by on 12:30 am in 4ED | 0 comments

So my friends the module is now finished and Cat has completed all her design work. I did a read through of the module at it all looks good except for one bug in the page numbering, so when she returns from her hockey tournament we should be good to on releasing the module. This is an ad I made for the upcoming BP-3 module from Blackbyrne Publishing. It’s a tweak of the back cover of the module and shows the “Alabatross Hunter”, one of the monsters from the adventure and the layout from...

Top franchises that should be made into an RPG

Posted by on 11:45 pm in RPG | 0 comments

So, I was thinking about the good work that @atminn and @glimmthegnome were doing to create an X-Com role-playing game – a noble endeavor indeed that I anxiously away –   and it made me wonder what other properties are out there which should be made into a role-playing game. I should also point out that while I’ve played other old-school RPGs in the past (1ED Boot Hill, 1ED Gamma World, 1ED Traveller, 1ED Champions), I have not had the chance to play many of the newer RPGs out on the market, so it wouldn’t surprise me...

Crafting Adventure with Evernote

Posted by on 5:42 pm in 4ED | 0 comments

Writing has begun in earnest on my second module in the “Larvik Island” series. I thought I’d send out some kudos to the good people at Evernote, an application that I’ve found essential as I finish post-production on the first module and start outlining the second. Goodbye OneNote, Hello Evernote I started using Evernote at work a couple years ago when I switched from using a Windows PC to a Mac full-time. I had used Microsoft OneNote as a “personal wiki” organizing tool – a fine tool in its own right –  and needed a replacement...

Lessons Learned from D&D Playtesting

Posted by on 3:34 am in 4ED, RPG, Writing | 0 comments

Lately, I have been impressed with how some publishers in the Dungeons and Dragons community, like the good folks at Emerald Press, Nevermet Press and others, have been extremely forthcoming in blog posts with sales figures and other internal company workings. In that same spirit, this post is my attempt to be equally candid for the benefit of others thinking about writing their own adventures. While I fully intend to write additional articles that cover more aspects of the writing process, this article is specifically focused on the value...

Larvik Island: 2011-02-21 Update

Posted by on 9:49 pm in 4ED | 0 comments

So, there’s been a good amount of progress on the module in the last couple of weeks, here’s the breakdown for the faithful readers as well as formally introduce some of other module collaborators: Writing: The writing has been done for a while, and all that is happening now is minor tweaks for grammar and clarity that I discover as I go through playtesting Playtesting: Of the 15 encounters in the module, we’ve now finished playtesting 8 of them, and the PCs are now pushing into the final stretch of the adventure. The PCs...

Larvik Island: 2011-02-06 Update

Posted by on 7:29 pm in 4ED | 0 comments

Just a quick update as to where things are in the production cycle: the writing is, effectively done, and I’m now playtesting the entire module. With each session that I playtest, I go back and tweak some of the writing here and there to make a point clearer in tactics or character background. One of the things that has become interesting is how to deal with the size of the module: as it currently stands it is written as 15 encounters (not including the wandering encounters, which should add another 2 or 3 small skirmishes at the least)...

Larvik Island: Beta Draft Completed

Posted by on 2:58 am in 4ED | 0 comments

Over the MLK holiday here in the US, I completed the final 3 maps required for Larvik Island that the team and I have been working on. As of this writing, the module contains 14 encounters (excluding Random Encounter I’ve designed) requiring 15 maps and, with the art previews I’ve currently received, clocks in at almost 21,000 words across 47 pages. So what’s next? I’ve DM’d 4 game sessions so far with the playtesters – the latest just last week. We’re getting through about 2 encounters a night (give...
